Comparison between glass insulator and ceramic insulator
Glass insulator: it has better mechanical and electrical properties, and its tensile strength, electrical breakdown resistance, vibration fatigue resistance, arc burn resistance, cold and heat shock resistance are better than porcelain insulator. And different from porcelain insulator, glass insulator has the ability of self elimination of zero value self explosion, so it is easy to be found without insulation test. The self explosion rate is usually higher in the first three years, which is the opposite of porcelain insulator. Decades of operation and test data show that toughened glass insulator has long-term stable mechanical and electrical performance and long service life.
Ceramic insulator: it has the advantages of good insulation performance, climate change resistance, heat resistance and flexible assembly, and is widely used in various voltage levels of lines. Disc porcelain insulator is of breakdown type. It is composed of porcelain parts with different physical and chemical properties and metal parts by cement. It will gradually deteriorate under the action of electric field, mechanical load and natural sunshine, wind, rain, snow, fog, etc. for a long time, which will threaten the safe operation of power grid. Especially in case of flashover of insulator string containing deteriorated insulator (due to lightning stroke or pollution flashover, etc.), the head of deteriorated insulator may be heated instantly and explode, resulting in the accident of conductor landing. The glass insulator and porcelain insulator can be used according to the line design.
